▌Project Overview

The core philosophy of the Taitung Sound Art Festival is "using sound as a medium to connect land, people, and culture through listening."

Grounded in Taitung's unique mountain-and-sea landscape and its deep cultural heritage, the festival uses our senses as a starting point to explore the land, employing sound as a medium to discover local "resonance." Sound and cultural contexts are not merely targets to be collected; rather, they represent a dynamic vitality of the place, co-created by the community and the environment.

Sound is ubiquitous, yet hearing is often the most overlooked of our senses. Therefore, through diverse formats such as cross-disciplinary performances, sound exhibitions, workshops, artist residencies, and forums, we invite the public to awaken their auditory senses and collectively explore the existence, understanding, and connectivity of sound.

▌Program Description

"Taitung Soundscapes 100" project aims to construct a local auditory culture by systematically collecting a diverse array of sounds from Taitung—spanning its human history, mountain and coastal landscapes, and daily life—to invite the public to co-create an exclusive auditory map of the region.

Starting from the Taitung Art Museum, the project connects ten local businesses: Village Reading Archive, Miller Hair Salon, Yong-Kang Pharmacy, PAGE CAFÉ Taitung Story House, Joy Art, Xiao Mu Jiang, Front Building Coffee, Tian Wei Jia (Niu Wen Shui), Giggle Bookstore, and the Ocean Environment Classroom. These venues will collaboratively exhibit unique soundscapes recorded by the public.

In addition to online listening, visitors to these eleven locations can experience a different side of Taitung through dedicated headphones and sound installations.

On July 17th and 18th, in partnership with the Taiwan Soundscape Association, we will celebrate this year’s Taiwan Listening Day. We invite the public to sail off the coast of Chenggong, where they can use hydrophones to listen to the quiet, profound world beneath the waves. Furthermore, in collaboration with the Ocean Environment Classroom, we will offer "soundwalks" that guide participants through the cultural history, marine environment, and fish market culture of Chenggong Township, and a nighttime viewing of Sanxiantai.

On August 15th and 16th, eight domestic and international performing groups will present interdisciplinary performances on the lawn of the Taitung Art Museum.
