▌Project Overview

Deep Slowness: 2026 Taitung Craft Exhibition

2026 Taitung Craft Exhibition, themed "Deep Slowness," invites us to return to the scale of "deep time" and contemplate how craft finds its place within the land. In Taitung, life’s rhythm is dictated by geology and tides, where the daily existence of diverse ethnic groups is intimately intertwined with natural cycles. Craft here is far more than a mere object; it is a vocabulary that carries a worldview. Materials such as rattan, shell ginger, and woven textiles record shifts in climate, shaping a unique aesthetic and tactile sensibility.

This "Deep Culture" resides in the ethics behind every technique, allowing woven patterns and pottery to sustain the collective memory of a people. "Deep Ecology" reflects a constant negotiation with nature—the patience required for materials to mature is, in itself, an act of profound respect for the land's rhythm. Through the labor of craft, creators chart "Deep Maps" that transcend geographic peripheries, fostering "Deep Relationships" that build a continuous dialogue between humanity, nature, ancestors, and the future.

"Deep Slowness" transforms slowness into a form of "thickness"—a depth born from the compression of geological time and the accumulation of cultural memory. At the confluence of mountains and sea, Taitung uses rattan, bamboo, clay, and looms as mediums to infuse life with focus, weaving a rhythm that faces the future. Here, craft renders the depth of slowness perceptible and tangible, ensuring it is passed down through the fingertips from one generation to the next.
